In the wake of this entire election ruckus, to me as a student I think we should bow our heads in
shame for not addressing this at the student level but rather letting it get to Senior Management
level. I think the Electoral Commission headed by Bismark Yeboah, the Vetting Committee and
as a matter of fact the Judiciary Committee led by His Lordship Akugri has really failed the entire student
populace whose src dues are used in paying their sitting allowances and feeding. For the SRC
President, it beats my imagination why he sat on that letter and never bothered to even show it to
his fellow SRC executives.
The EC from day one has displayed gross incompetence and the culmination effect is what we
are seeing now. Wasn’t he the same EC who formed that illegal vetting committee till Yoki
petitioned him? And the best he could do as a payback for been corrected to do the right thing
was to put an injunction on that poor innocent NUGS Dinner. Lol. Who does that as a leader?
These are indeed sad days for this budding university as students leaders are been manipulated
anyway and anyhow. This issue could have easily been solved at our level without necessarily
going to the VC. The petitioners had enough evidence to buttress certain issues raised but our
Judiciary Committee members in their own wisdom said there were not enough evidence to act
on therefore passed certain candidates and now we are all facing the aftermath of their actions
though is barely two weeks into examination.
THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION
From filing of nomination till now there have been several anomalies with regards to this
election ranging from late filing of nomination forms, people submitting forms with forged
signatures etc. The EC to me is not well vested in this field and should have consulted certain
people like Hon Gator who was part of the Electoral Commission last year and he is the current
EC for NAMSA. That gentleman has a lot of Electoral knowledge and would have easily
dispensed them to the EC. I don’t understand where he is in a hurry to or what he stands to gain
if things are shabbily done. Is it the money he is interested in or he wants or a good work to be
done. The EC and his people should as a matter of urgency consult some renowned people like
the aforementioned Gator man and seek ideas from him. The EC should bear in mind that we
shouldn’t be in a rush to vote since the rush would once again leave several potholes again. We
don’t really want to go court in these trying moments again cos personally I don’t trust the kind
of judiciary system we have in UHAS.
THE VETTING COMMITTEE
The least said about this committee the better. Though full of very honorable men, they didn’t
deliver to the benefit and interest of students whose dues were used in paying their allowances.
The constitution and the electoral CI grant them to make follow ups on academic transcripts
through the EC at the Academic Directorate but obviously due diligence wasn’t done and this
has caused us this huge disservice. The vetting committee could have done better because we
really trusted them due to the caliber of men they were. Elsewhere in other schools, the vetting
committee isn’t made up of only students but the dean of students, alumni who are good in their
leadership fields etc but in uhas our constitution mandates only students to be on the committee
which is a little bit neolithic and barbaric to say the least. This makes the vetting committee very
effective and efficient. Constitutional amendment is what I would suggest in time to come.
JUDICIAL COMMITTEE
The Judicial Committee which sat on a petition with no signature to wit wasn’t signed really did
us a huge disservice. They had the power backed by our loop holed constitution which was
blindly copy and pasted to also do their clarification from management about the prevailing
misses which were brought to them. They never did that and we are here today partly due to their
negligence.
ASPIRANTS
ABRAHAM NORMAN NORTEY
The accusations leveled against this man are too huge and numerous. Recently in circulation was
a letter from his own HOD redrawing a recommendation letter he wrote for him. Before that was
a letter from the Dean of Students instructing the SRC President to remove Norman from his
position. For someone who wants to become president of Ghana in 2050, these allegations are
not the best to be leveled against you. Well, if indeed these allegations are not true I will
personally fund him to seek justice at the Ho high court and I promise cos this is a gross image
tarnishing and punishable by law. He should take the university on if he thinks the schools is not
acting in the spirit of fairness and natural justice as his communiqué suggested.
HANSON PHILIP
As to how come he was able manipulate the system to obtain the transcript is only God who
knows. But come to think of it, is the school system that loose to doctor a transcript? If yes then
the school isn’t secured at all IT security wise. I am sure if you break into the system and
manipulate your results, the punishment wouldn’t be this low. Elsewhere in other school, he
would have sacked out rightly for such an act. Or maybe the vc is been magnanimous in his acts
of late cos in the case of Norman too he could have been sacked. If indeed there were
discrepancies in his gpa as has been speculated, he should seek redress from the academic
directorate cos this is also an image tarnishing act.
OPATA JEFEERY
One indecisive, unserious, unprepared soul I have ever seen in UHAS. Such a person can never
face management in discussion let alone leading the student populace of UHAS. I have attended
several parliamentary sittings and I was even informed he resigned from being a member of
parliament due to sitting allowance worth 30 Ghana cedis. Hihihi. For someone of his caliber to
lead the student populace it is better we have no src president mpo. He went for vetting for
TESCON President (passed and was waiting for election), later wanted to go for the NUGS
President position, and again filled for the SRC President out of the blue. He didn’t end there
ooo, he resigned after vetting and manifesto reading and merges his camp with team Norman all
because he knew he was going to lose in the election. He went on to campaign for Norman in the
various hostels and just yesterday he issued a communiqué disengaging himself from Norman,
funny though. This person wants to be the SRC President? Full of indecisiveness, not prepared
too. Some of these issues can only happen in uhas because those who a good leadership wise are
not willing to lead and our cgpa caveat in the constitution should be looked at cos it’s really
causing more harm than good to us students. You can’t equate academic excellence to leadership and servitude
CONCLUSION
1. With the gross incompetence exhibited by the Electoral Commission, I propose they should be
dissolved and appointment made again if possible Gator should be made to handle the election
issue from now.
2. Nominations should be opened again for only the SRC President for interested students to pick
nominations and contest.
3. we shouldn’t be in a hurry to vote this semester tho it is imperative we do. Acting SRC
executives can be appointed to man the affairs of the src even as plans are made to allow the
aspirants now who would be in final year next semester to be voted for.
